Cheeky: Congratulations on being one of our Top 10 Cheeky Chicks of the Year! What does being Cheeky mean to you?
Amy Cahill: The Cheeky women I know are confident, goal-oriented and always take time to enjoy life.
Cheeky: How does it feel to be chosen as the Cheeky Teacher?
AC: There are so many amazing teachers in Chicago who go above and beyond everyday for their students. I feel honored to represent all of those hardworking teachers.
Cheeky: Tell us about what you do for a living?
AC: I am a high school math teacher at one of the country’s first hybrid schools. This year I am teaching five different math courses, including Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II. As a “hybrid” teacher, I work with students virtually and in a traditional environment.
Cheeky: What’s the best part of your job? The worst? The most stressful? The most exciting?
AC: I love working with my students! The best part of my job is when students get into math, push themselves beyond what they think they can do, and actually have fun doing it! The worst part of my job is when students give up, and I can’t find the spark to keep them going. Teachers in Chicago have a lot of weight on their shoulders: the expectations to raise test scores and the passing rate can be overwhelming and stressful. Every little win a student makes is exciting.
Cheeky: Who do you consider to be your role model?
AC: My mom and sister. I am lucky to have strong women in my family who inspire and motivate me to reach my goals. My sister has an amazing work ethic and achieves every goal she puts her mind to. My mom is finishing a career of over 35 years in education and continues to teach fitness classes. I hope to emulate her ability to balance a career, family and healthy, happy living.
Cheeky: This city is chock-full-of activities/to-dos/events – are you involved with anything outside of your profession?
AC: During the fall and spring, I am on Chicago Sport and Social football and softball teams. I play on a tennis team at Midtown, coach Girls on the Run and teach Bootcamp for a friend’s personal training company, Fit with Krit.
Cheeky: Now for some Cheeky questions! What’s your favorite restaurant in Chicago?
AC: Kaze – unique and delicious sushi. I also love a casual night at Brick’s Pizza or Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Co.
Cheeky: Favorite thing to do in the spring? Fall? Winter? Summer?
AC: Summer: a long run or bike ride along the lake with my husband.
Fall: enjoying the fall colors and hitting the farmers’ market.
Spring: all teachers love spring break!
Winter:
Cheeky: Last but not least, what is the cheekiest thing you’ve done this week?
AC: Coached my Girls on the Run team. GOTR is an amazing organization impacting thousands of girls in Chicago. One season can transform a girl’s confidence and self-esteem.
