Kelli Zink Gives You the Skinny

by Kelli Zink – June 9, 2010

Q: Now that summer is here, I really want to drop those last five pounds so I feel confident in my bikini, but I don’t want to starve myself.  Any good healthy breakfast ideas?

KZ: Have no fear, bikini babe.  Believe it or not, some of your favorite grab-and-go spots are stepping up to the plate with healthy ways to kick off your day.

Here are a few of my faves:

Subway’s English Muffin Melt.  Made with egg whites and a light wheat English muffin that’s only 90 calories – this sandwich is almost too good to be true. Swap out the ham for lean turkey or a veggie patty and load it up with veggies for a breakfast that weighs in at under 250 calories.

Einstein Bros. Egg White Sandwich.  Even carb-a-phobes don’t have to feel guilty about the base of this sandwich, which is high in fiber and good grains.  I swap the turkey sausage for avocado and keep the salsa for a delicious and filling sammy for under 300 calories.

Starbucks Spinach and Feta Wrap.  This little guy has been a staple in my diet for some time now. It’s 280 calories of awesomeness, travels well and keeps me full until my mid-morning snack. It’s so good that even my guy friends are hooked!

Q: How do I make summer cocktails healthier?

KZ: This is always an internal debate when the waitress walks over. I want the margarita with salt – supersized. I should have a vodka water.

But vodka waters get boring!

The staff over at Kirkwood has come up with what they call “Healthy Vodka”- mixing Vitamin Water’s XXX with SVEDKA vodka, hoping their patrons will benefit from the drink’s anti-oxidants rather than consuming empty sugar calories like those in regular juice and soda.

Bump it up a notch at home by mixing your vodka, light rum or tequila with VitaCoco coconut water, Vitamin Water Zero or iced green tea. Make mojitos with Truvia instead of sugar and use fresh mango juice instead of processed orange in mimosas.

These little tweaks will save you up to 500 calories a night (that’s 3500 calories if you drink almost every day, equaling one full pound)!
