Wine Fit for a Fashionistsa

There's Nothing Sexier Than Sparkling Wine

by The Cheeky Wine Guide – February 14, 2012

Franco Ziliani (center) found in Guido Berlucchi (right) a driven individual of exceptional taste to help him realize his dream of a winemaking revolution in Franciacorta; a classic method sparkling wine to rival the Champagnes of France.

Those Italians. Even with “bunga bunga” and a cringe worthy economy, you can always be certain to rely on them for one thing: style. Lying at the heart of this style is Milan, a city that might just be the fashion and design epicenter of the world. Gucci, Versace, Armani, Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana—need I say more? But what to hold in the hand when clothed with such style?  Take a quick jaunt outside the city and you’ll discover a winery that produces sparkling wines befitting of a Cheeky fashionista.

Berlucchi is a name well known to Italians as it is their leading sparkling brand, but here in the states it is a virtual unknown. You are about to become stylishly in-the-know. Family owned (remember how important that is) and celebrating their 50th anniversary, the winery is introducing two sparkling wines produced using the classic sparkling wine grapes, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Berlucchi Cuvée 61, like all wines from Berlucchi, is made in the classic Champagne method—méthode Champenoise; or as the Italians say, Metodo Classico.

There are two varieties: Cuvee 61 Brut (75% Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Noir) and Cuvee 61 Rosé (50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir). I tried them at home and found the Rosé to be just as satisfying as a Champagne, much less sweet, of course, than Moscato, and I rather liked the idea that it was from Milan. So it was with anticipatory delight and curiosity that I decided to serve Berlucchi Cuvee 61 Rosé at a small gathering of Cheeky Wine Guide readers. They gushed over the absolutely gorgeous pink color and the taste. “More complex than I might have imagined,” said the petite brunette. “It’s playful.”

Sitting with friends, sipping a glass of Cuvee 61; well, it’s like a good hair-oh, gosh, these pants fit now-why, yes, thank you for noticing sort of day.  Style can be a matter of taste, but in this case taste is a matter of style.

Email me so I can tell you where to find this newcomer in the Chicagoland area.
