If you already know the answer to this question, bravo. If you think you don’t know the answer, chances are, you probably do know Landon Pigg, but just don’t realize it. You know that AT&T commercial, with the dreamy acoustic song in the background, as the soft-spoken singer croons, “I think that possibly, maybe I’m falling for you…”? Yep. That’s Landon Pigg. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter (who was actually raised in Oak Park) was propelled into the spotlight via commercial earlier this year, just in time for the release of his third studio album, The Boy Who Never. Pigg’s sound is a blend of everything from acoustic alt-country, to indie-rock, to flecks of bubblegum-pop. Mix in his boyish good looks and natural vulnerability, and it’s no wonder the songwriter has been gaining some attention as of late—and no, not just from the ladies—his music would reach any fans of Travis, Rufus Wainwright, or anyone who appreciates honest, emotive lyrics. The Boy Who Never is mostly comprised of acoustic-based songs of love and/or heartache (you can’t have one without the other, huh?), with appearances of horn and string sections throughout the record. With many of Pigg’s songs easy-listening acoustics, his lyrics take the forefront, as in “Blue Skies,” as he sings, “I never knew that Cupid felt like this / I want to buy his arrows of loneliness / And when my heart broke, did you like the sound of it? / You said ‘at least a song will come out of it…’ Well this is a song for you.”
Pigg has surely had a whirlwind year, and not just because that AT&T ad is played during every commercial break. The songwriter also made his film debut last month, in Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, Whip It, starring Ellen Page. So far this year, the 26-year-old has tackled music, TV, and now film… we can’t wait to see where he’ll venture next.
