As a child of the 80s, never did I think I’d see the return of leggings. At first I said I would not succumb to this trend unless I wanted to feel like I was ten-years-old all over again. But not too much later, there I was, wearing leggings with the rest of the women in the country.
This year, my sister – the ultimate fashion risk-taker – was the first person I noticed wearing denim leggings. Now this, I decided, was a trend I would not follow. Unless I was a size double zero, how could I look good wearing these? And really, the name alone – a combination of the words denim and leggings – made me cringe just a bit. Jeggings!
Cut to about two weeks ago and I’m in the Saks Fifth Avenue fitting room. The sales associate handed me a pair of the denim leggings I so refused to wear and since I needed a pair of jeans to try on the cute tops with, I reluctantly put them on. Imagine my surprise when I faced myself in the mirror. Could it be? I actually looked pretty good in these jeggings and they passed the ultimate test – my butt looked pretty good in them too!
So can you wear jeggings regardless if you’re a size 2 or a size 10? Yes, but you need to abide by the following rules to get the most flattering jegging.
- Wear a dark pair. Light or acid-washed jeggings are less attractive.
- Jeggings truly look best worn with high heels or tucked into boots.
- Pair your jeggings with a longer tee, cardigan or tunic.
- If you’re tucking in your shirt, wear a thong. No one needs to see underwear lines through your jeggings.
- Find a jegging with pockets and a zipper rather than a pair that is pull-on and only has a seam down the front.
I suggest trying a pair of jeggings the next time you’re out shopping. There are numerous boutiques/department stores carrying them in a range of prices. My favorite jeggings are by J Brand, Joe’s, Topshop and Paige. Aside from being cute, jeggings are so comfortable because of the stretch. Most of the ones out there have a higher rise, so you can avoid any spillage on top. You’ll also eliminate the saggy butt factor from jeans that are too loose or worn in.
Now that I’m a convert to the trend, I’m only hoping that scrunchies and hyper-color tees don’t make a comeback next season!
