What I Remember Most

An Ode to My Roommate

by Lyndsay Rush – July 15, 2009

I saw the movie Up recently.

It was a delightfully and uproariously told story and much more than I expected from an animated film.

One of my favorite lines came from the star of the film, Russell, when he talks about the memories he has of his biological dad:

“It might sound boring, but I think the boring stuff is what I remember most.”

This struck me. For many reasons.

One of which is especially significant this week. One of my best friends, Bridget, is getting married this Saturday. And I have had the honor of having her as a roommate for the past 2 1/2 years.

I’m sure most women can relate to the sweet intricacies that come from living with friends. There are certain parts of people’s personalities that are only unsurfaced by the consistent, daily, mundane, ordinary parts of life.

So for the next few moments, I would like to provide an ode to my dear, dear, friend. In the days before her entire life changes drastically, I would like to remind her how loved she is and what a privilege it has been to be so intimately involved in her life.

I remember countless winter nights when I would come home from work to the smell of you cooking chilli for dinner, I remember always pranking Lauren when she fell asleep on the couch, I remember making fun of your pajamas, I remember when I was looking for work last year and you always encouraged me, I remember summer walks through neighborhood streets, I remember piling on your bed to look through pictures from the weekend, I remember your enthusiasm for every single crush I’ve ever had, I remember sharing midday pots of coffee, I remember borrowing your clothes and not asking for permission, I remember spying on Lauren’s dates from our front window, I remember trying to lay out on our pathetic “deck”, I remember the bat that somehow got in our apartment in 2007, I remember kitchen dance parties, I remember when we turned the spare bedroom into a flippy-cup room for your birthday party, I remember putting on costumes for no reason, I remember watching you fall in love with Jared.

And I agree with Russell; this might sound boring, but it’s what I will miss the most and what I will always remember .
