Home Decor for a Goddess (on a Budget)

by Jessica Zweig – March 2, 2010

If you’re like me, home decorating can be a little daunting. For two reasons: 1) it is expensive and 2) it’s complicated. For as much as it pains me to admit this, I am not blessed with Nate Berkus’ talent, Martha Stewart’s sensibility, or Oprah’s bank account, for that matter.  Thank the Cheeky shopping goddesses, the answer to all my décor woes has finally launched in Chicago.

west elm is to Pottery Barn what CB2 is to Crate & Barrel – but dare I say, way better? It appeals to the savvy, modern shopper looking not only for a deal, but style…particularly the urban dweller’s sense of style.  And there is nothing generic or monochromatic about that style. It’s fresh, it’s playful, it’s simple, and most of all, it’s smart.

On another intelligent note, the store is uniquely arranged with loft settings, replicating apartment size spaces (yes, even for those who shack up in those earnest studios, west elm has something for you too), and is designed to showcase how rooms can complement each other. The intention of these fully-furnished spaces is to provide inspiration and provide shoppers to visualize the same look in their own apartments or homes.

What does west elm sell? Think functional and fashionable key furniture pieces, funky throw pillows, classic bedding, mod lighting fixtures, window treatments, candles, accessories, and much more that are available year-round as well as updated seasonal collections.

And best of all, since no one has Nate Berkus to call up (or maybe you do), check out the expanded Design Studio Center for interior design consultations with west elm’s design-centric associates who are pretty much the next best thing. Seriously.

And about that lack-of-Oprah-size-bank-account-proportions, the price point at west elm is the best I’ve ever seen when it comes to style, quality, and affordability.

See…the Cheeky goddesses do listen.
