What do you get when you cross U2 with Coldplay with Maroon 5 with Gavin DeGraw? Ireland’s newest wonder, The Script (Danny O’Donoghue, Mark Sheehan and Glen Power). Their breakthrough single, “Breakeven (Falling to Pieces),” has been heating up on the radio charts ever since it debuted in America (the album itself has been out in Europe since 2008).
The Script possesses an easy and flowing charm along with a sunny disposition. They mostly bring soulsters Maroon 5 to mind, especially with tracks “We Cry” and “Before The Worst” in which there’s a little bit more of an R&B influence than a rock sound.
“Rusty Halo” sounds like it could be U2 if you closed your eyes, but it’s hard not to imagine that up-and-comers wouldn’t be at least a smidge influenced by the biggest Irish band ever.
Some of the songs fall flat – “I’m Yours” tries too hard to be a yearning ballad; “Talk You Down” is uninteresting in sound and unbelievable in lyric, and “If You See Kay” is a stock song at best – one we’ve heard a million times about being concerned for a friend or lover. Yawn.
Overall, it’s a strong debut and hopefully there’s enough momentum for a follow-up. Move over, Bono – there’s a new lad(s) in town.
