The High Fidelity record store may have been simulated, but Chicago truly has an independent record shop to boast about. Reckless Records has been “serving Chicago’s hipsters since 1992” (as proclaimed on the store’s Myspace page). Reckless is the ideal spot to buy, sell or trade CDs and records. Initially UK-based, Reckless migrated to Chicago over a decade ago, setting up shop in Lakeview. Since then, it has expanded its business to three locations across Chicago – adding stores in The Loop and in Wicker Park (perhaps their busiest location). Its walls are decked with concert posters and autographed memorabilia, and CD racks adorn the walls. Listening stations showcase Reckless’ employee favorites, and with a staff as musically knowledgeable as the Reckless team, it’s an interesting feature. Also available are DVDs, books and music magazines, such as Venus – a magazine dedicated to women in the arts.
Reckless boasts an impressive collection of local, international and rare CDs and records. You can even bring in your retired cassette tapes for trade-in or cash! Prices are generally low, ranging from $8-$20, so you can shop guilt-free. Another Reckless highlight are the frequent (and free!) in-store performances.
Who says record stores are a trend of the past? Sure, iTunes and digital downloads dominate the music-purchasing world, but gems like Reckless still prevail. So, drop by any of their three locations to support local business and experience a Chicago staple – and while you’re at it, get lost in your own High Fidelity moment.
