Scene and Be Seen
Looking for Nightlife Exclusives? Get you Cheeky Card!If you work in the loop or hop on the El at State and Lake, then you’ve likely seen a line of dapper Chicagoans snaking around the underbelly of Lake Street. Like clockwork – 5:30 pm – the line to access Roof, theWit’s staple drink destination, begins to form.
I’d rather do laundry than wait in line…for anything.
But fear not, because theWit recently unveiled its second-story lounge, Phoenix, which is adjacent to Todd Stein’s Cibo Matto. Eureka!
Every Thursday through Saturday, from 6:30 to 10:30 pm, local and emerging artists will offer live performances from “the perch,” the landing situated by the glass stairwell that connects the lobby to the second floor. In addition to the live performances, a new hand crafted cocktail menu has been introduced. The prices are steep for just one cocktail, but the lively ambiance, cool décor and people-watching make it worth it. Plus, imbibers can order from a small bite menu from Stein, exclusive to those sitting in the Phoenix Lounge.
My three faves?
The Phoenix Fizz ($14)
Based on the Fizz, widely popular in America between 1900 and the 1940s, and known as a hometown specialty of New Orleans; made with Tanqueray gin, fresh lemon and lime juices, simple syrup, pasteurized egg white, cream and orange flower water.
The 201 State ($15)
Similar to the East India cocktail, which popular history suggests originated at the Manhattan Club in New York City in the early 1870s; made with Hennessy VSOP, Grand Marnier 100yr, pineapple juice, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters with a pineapple garnish.
Aviation ($14)
The Aviation was created by Hugo Ensslin, head bartender at the Hotel Wallick in New York, in the early 20th century; made with Hendrix vodka, Maraschino liqueur, and fresh lemon juice.
