The Bachelorette

Will Ashley Find Love?

by Lauren Shapiro – June 15, 2011

The time has come for another season. It’s the time for audiences to devote two hours every Monday night to the drama-filled reality show, date after date, rose after rose. You may think it’s superficial, that there’s no possible way to fall in love in just a few short weeks, that prancing around in bikinis in exotic locations is completely unrealistic.

That all might be true, but that’s just it: it’s not reality, it’s The Bachelorette.

More than 20 seasons of the reality show have aired, resulting in only one successful marriage thanks to the very first Bachelorette, Trista Sutter. There were a few long-term relationships and even more dwindling, unrealistic romances. The show isn’t exactly known for creating true romance and relationship longevity. In fact, the show might be best known for its hot tub scenes. And a lot of them.

But this season, the newest leading lady, Ashley Hebert, is hoping to change that. After letting her insecurities get the best of her on last season’s The Bachelor, Ashley has decided to give the show another try but this time reversing roles, promising to hold nothing back.  And she is sticking to her promise. Though she did receive text messages from past fellow contestant, Michelle Money, warning her that suave contestant, Bentley, was there for the infamous “wrong reasons,” Ashley chose to follow her heart instead. Not only did she keep him around, but she proceeded to fall in love with him.

Though I’m sure most audiences were screaming at Ashley through their televisions as Bentley proceeded to call Ashley the “ugly duckling,” insisting that he wasn’t attracted to her and that he would eventually ditch out on the show, Ashley was simply following her heart. Eventually, Bentley did leave the show and in the process, left Ashley completely heart broken. Though it’s difficult to see how anyone could fall in love after just a few short weeks, it seemed Ashley had really let her emotions go with Bentley… and he took them with him when he left the show for good.

But, the show must go on. Though it took Ashley a few days of hysteria and panic to realize that Bentley was not coming back, she finally pulled herself together for the remaining contestants. After a break up, most girls resort to ice cream and cry fests. But getting whisked away to Thailand? Not too shabby.

As for the rest of the contestants, they seem to be as adorable and honest as they come. Clear front runners? JP, the gorgeous New Yorker who provides Ashley with her favorite kisses, and winemaker Ben F., who quickly caught Ashley’s attention this past week on the group date at the orphanage in Thailand.

So where will this season take us? Will Ashley find love and prove that reality television can translate into actual reality? We’ll just have to stay tuned to find out.
