The A-List: Workout Songs

by Amanda Troop – June 17, 2010

First, a confession: I hate working out. It’s been a relatively new development for me, this working out thing, and wouldn’t you know? It takes work! But my sister’s getting married yadda yadda yadda and so the days of my relatively sedentary lifestyle had to go. So far, it’s been going ok. I bitch, and I sweat and I curse my sister up and down for having this wedding which has forced me to CHANGE MY ENTIRE LIFE…

Ahem. Music definitely helps this process. When asking others what they like to work out to, I got everything from Lupe Fiasco to Mozart to Ashlee Simpson. Here are a couple of my faves.

  1. 1. “Mercy” – Duffy

It might be ironic, especially in my case, because my body is begging me for mercy each and every time. It’s pretty motivating though.

  1. 2. “In One Ear” – Cage The Elephant

This song has just enough of a flippant attitude to keep me running even when I think I’d rather die.

  1. 3. “Don’t Stop Believin’” – Journey

Cheesy? Yes. Whatever.

  1. 4. “Nara” – E.S. Posthumus

Some might recognize this as the opening theme for “Cold Case,” and it’s also been featured in movie trailers. It’s an instrumental, chill but uplifting song.

  1. Hometown Glory” – Adele

I use this one for cooling down. It’s slow and majestic enough to end my workout, while reminding me that Chicago is a great place to run outdoors.

So, which songs work for you?
