The A-List: What About Chicago?

by Amanda Troop – September 9, 2010

Lately, I’ve been feeling a little left out. Between this year’s “California Gurls” and last year’s “Empire State of Mind,” I’ve been wondering when Chicago’s anthem is going to come out. When is the music industry going to take as much pride in this city as we do?

Yes, I know, there are annoying aspects of this city. Parking meters…er, boxes, for example. I don’t even have a car, and I hate them. They’re stupid. Surely that’s not the reason why. As far as I can recollect, there’s that one song, “Lake Shore Drive” by Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah. But that song was recorded in 1970 and was also a reference to acid and people aren’t even on acid (legally!) anymore – not to mention, most people don’t even know that song! I’m sure ‘Ye must have done a couple, and Fall Out Boy probably… but I don’t recall them becoming bonafide hits.

So…what is it? Are we not pretty enough? Too fat? Too tall? Did you like us better when we had the Sears Tower? Are the winters too cold and the summers too hot? I just want something we can dance to now, get really sick of in about a weekand hear on an infomercial about five years from now. Is that really too much to ask?

Am I wrong? Are there, in fact, verbose musical love letters to Chicago of which I am unaware out there somewhere?
