In 2009, Mark Linkous (aka Sparklehorse) teamed up with mega-producer Danger Mouse for the collaboration that would become Dark Night of The Soul. Due to legal conflicts, the album was shelved – which is a pity, because most people could have gotten to enjoy this sooner. Why should you listen to it? Here are a couple reasons.

Dark Night of The Soul

5. This album features singers like Iggy Pop, The Flaming Lips, David Lynch (yes, the director), James Mercer (of The Shins), Suzanne Vega and Nina Persson (of The Cardigans) plus more.

4. Since this was produced by Danger Mouse, chances are it’s nothing less than perfection. (Which, of course, it is.)

3. David Lynch, as I’ve mentioned, not only sings on the tracks, but also made a book of photography to accompany the disc. These photos, while eerie, are certainly thought provoking and definitely enhance the listening experience.

2. This album has a little bit of every genre in it, whether intentional or not. It’s almost mind-boggling from beginning to end.

1. Tragically, Linkous passed away earlier this year. If nothing else, Dark Night of The Soul serves as a reminder of his shining talent.
