The A-List: 4th of July Songs

by Amanda Troop – July 1, 2010

Get ready for the fireworks. The barbeques. The end of Taste of Chicago. While you’re chilling with family and friends on this notorious grilling holiday, set your speakers up for these tunes.

  1. “Star Spangled Banner” – Jimi Hendrix

What’s more patriotic than a memorable rendition of our national anthem by one of the world’s greatest guitarists?

  1. “Sweet Home Alabama” – Lynrd Skynrd

An homage to the South – a reminder of all things sun and blue skies – even though the song itself is a response to discrimination in the 60s and 70s.

  1. “Born In The USA” – Bruce Springsteen

While the lyrics may not be so friendly, it’s still a pretty anthemic song, one worthy of loud-speaker play.

  1. “Pink Houses” – John Mellencamp

I think the lyrics speak for themselves on this one…

  1. “Philadelphia Freedom” – Elton John

When isn’t there a good time to play a little old-school Elton John?

Have a great holiday, everyone. Relax, have fun, and… don’t set anything on fire.
