Summertime Skincare Rescue

Trust Us on the Sunscreen

by Stacy Levy – August 8, 2012

We have made it to the dog days of summer. Soaring temps and high humidity make Chicago feel more amazon jungle than urban jungle. The blistering heat and constantly changing weather conditions can also wreak havoc on your skin. Dry skin, sunburn and hyperpigmentation, and acne are some of the not-so-pleasant side effects of long beach days and sweaty runs on the beach. Cheeky surveyed some top Chicago spas for the insider information on products and treatments that will help combat these summer skin ailments and keep you gorgeous during these treasured dog days.

Dry Skin

Dehydration, excessive sun exposure, chlorine and air conditioning can all lead to dry skin. To combat these extreme conditions and restore balance in the skin, Cellular Intelligence offers an Oxygen Infusion Facial to help soothe and hydrate. In this 30-minute treatment, the skin is cleansed, exfoliated and then an oxygen mist infuses a serum deep into your cells. This most effective treatment will leave the skin plumped and smooth while also diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. To maintain the benefits post-treatment, aesthetician Jessica Weil recommends an age-defying, enriched, oil-free moisturizer called Replenish from the spa’s signature skincare line.

Sunburn and Hyperpigmentation

You swear you applied sunscreen every 30 minutes but somehow your face is beet red. We have all been there. Redness, dryness and flaking from accidental sun exposure can be unsightly and quite painful. Not to mention the resulting hyperpigmentation/melasma which are commonly referred to as sun spots. For starters, Leah Chavie Skincare Boutique says when choosing an SPF, look for one that is “broad spectrum, provides UVA and UVB protection, and reapply. Applying once in the morning will not protect you all day.” For some much needed repair and restoration for sun damaged skin, try Leah Chavie’s 24-Karat Gold Collagen Wet Mask. The nourishing facial treatment will help to soothe, hydrate and restore the skin.

Acne

Summertime is perfect for outdoor sweat sessions, but excessive sweating, heat and humidity can put your oil glands in overdrive. Additionally, hormone fluctuations, irritants, poor diet and stress can wreak havoc on your skin, leaving you with unsightly blackheads and breakouts. The experts at exhale spa recommend blue light therapy to purify oxygen molecules in the skin. This powerful treatment, called the Cool-Beam at exhale, quickly and effectively destroys acne-causing bacteria resulting in clearer, brighter skin. The Cool-Beam treatment does not contain damaging (UV) light nor does it result in typical dryness or discomfort associated with topical medications. Toni Maggiore, Spa Director at exhale, says blue light therapy “is 100% non-invasive, drug-free with zero adverse side effects. It’s painless and can be done at the spa or at home with the hand held device ANSR.” A 60-minute Cool Beam at exhale is $200, a 30-minute Cool Beam is $130. The at-home treatment, the ANSR, can be purchased at exhale for $170.
