Looking for Restaurant Exclusives? Get Your Cheeky Card!If I had three words to describe this place, it would be swanky, swanky and swanky. At first impression, Roof in the new Wit Hotel almost seems out of place in good ole’ meat-and-potatoes Chicago and more apt for some trendy strip in sexy South Beach. But after a gander through the lofty, modern space with the most gorgeous outdoor patio I’ve ever witnessed (and a few unbelievable cocktails and brilliantly executed bar nibbles), I’m happy to report that Roof belongs right here where it is.
Apparently, a lot of people feel this way—and I mean a lot. My evening at Roof took place on a cold, dreary, rainy Tuesday, and there was still nowhere to sit. Almost. We luckily scored a cozy lil’ two top amidst all the people-watching action. I have one word to describe this crowd: fabulous. And hot. (Okay, that was two.) Yet it’s (interestingly enough) not pretentious. The Wit is located smack dab in the middle of the business district and it’s obvious the younger portion of the 9 to 5 crew was teeming for a place like Roof. But people are simply here to have a good time and the warm, accommodating staff is there to make sure of it.
So let’s talk about those cocktails, since I proudly tried three. My favorite being the “Roof Sling” made with Ron Zacapa 23 year rum, Punt e Mes Vermouth, bitters and house sour. Smokey, rich and not too sweet, this is a perfect reflection of a “summer sipping cocktail.” The “Ipanema” with Leblon Cachaca, apricot nectar, madiera and lime tasted like the best spiked apple cider I’ve ever had in my life, and was a tie for second next to the “Randy Raspberry.” Made with house raspberry syrup, Absolut, lemon and prosecco: it’s the girly version of raspberry lemonade–as if it needed to get girlier.
Sipping palate-inspiring drinks can make a gal hungry (or at least, this gal), so I implore you to try the grilled lamb burgers—a kicked up version of sliders with minted cucumber dressing and tomato marmalata on buttery buns. The salmon crudo comes with fava beans, red onion and a light and creamy lemon aioli and the roasted artichokes get dressed up with a cheesy fonduta and toasted almonds: both are light yet decadent pre-dinner snacks.
So come in your highest heels and your sharpest suit- it doesn’t really matter. What Chicagoans can really wear with style is a sense of pride. After all…we now have Roof.
