Rock of Ages is a classic boy-meets-girl story with a twist. Set in Hollywood in the 1980s, the story explores people pursuing their dreams and falling in love, all through classic rock hits and iconic musical groups of that era. The show begins its run in Chicago on September 21 at the Bank of America Theatre. Cheeky sat down with Rebecca Faulkenberry to discuss what it’s like to play Sherrie and what a tough job it is to have fun in the 80s every day for work.

Cheeky: What do you love about your character, Sherrie?

Rebecca Faulkenberry: She’s so positive and there’s something really lovely about playing a character like that, about thinking that the world is your oyster and any opportunity is within reach and possible. She goes into life like that, and out to LA like that in the story. It’s a really nice thing to play such a wonderful character and not to play a character that’s jaded in anyway.

Cheeky: Why would people love to come and see this show?

RF: It really is just so much fun, such a good time! The music is especially fun and of a different age. It’s all from the 80s, but even if you weren’t born then, you’ll still know all of the high power ballads. It’s a really funny script, so high energy. You go and you get fake lighters just like you would then, and it’s so different from any other theatre experience. You’re really brought into the show and you’re a part of it as the audience. There’s no barrier like some other shows out there.

Cheeky: What do you think of the prospect of the show being turned into a feature film?

RF: Well, it’s very relatable. It’s a good time and super funny and it’s touching at the same time. You see the boy and girl fall in love, they have problems, and then they get together in the end. It’s been done a million times but in this it’s just done so well. The story has good jokes and a great soundtrack, so you just don’t get tired of the same old story because it’s so different and original. And musicals are making their comeback and sparking interest at the moment.

Cheeky: What’s something Cheeky about you and your character?

RF: Lacy, pink panties. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a glimpse of them.
