Looking for Restaurant Exclusives? Get Your Cheeky Card!I’m a little apprehensive to rave about Rise. This may only add to my own slightly-too-long-of-a-wait time on a Friday night. Or on a Tuesday or Wednesday, for that matter. But if there’s one thing people like more than really good food, it’s really good sushi and Rise definitely rises to the occasion. So, I’ll play nice like they taught me in kindergarten – and share.
Situated in the heart of the very trendy Southport Corridor, Rise’s interior definitely parallels its location. Dim and mod lighting fixtures, minimalist décor and a stylish crowd provide Lakeview with a very cool it-spot, minus the attitude. Apart from the great locale and overly friendly staff, another obvious draw is the drink list. Adorned with a ton of sakes by the glass and bottle, a really great wine list (with enough options for the red and white drinkers), a wide array of Japanese beers and an exceptional specialty martini list, there is definitely something for every type of sushi lush. My personal fave, the Lychee Martini, also happens to be Rise’s signature. Not too sweet, not too dry and served with fresh lychee fruit, this drink alone can carry you throughout your meal. Aside from sushi, the menu boasts a great selection of appetizers and hot dishes, like the sea bass: a perfectly cooked filet made with sweet miso sauce and shitake mushrooms. Plus, there’s red snapper, garlic prawns and delectable Yaki Soba noodles made with fresh veggies, chicken and ginger.
There’s really only one word to describe Rise’s sushi list: awesome. The fish is so blatantly fresh and the chefs behind the sushi bar are always in a generous mood. Expect to find thickly cut slices of nigiri and sashimi and unbelievable maki rolls. Standouts would have to be the Honey Roll, made with albacore, cucumber, and a sesame honey sauce rolled in tempura crumbs; the Sapporo Roll, which is a spicy tuna roll wrapped with unagi and avocado; and my absolute favorite roll in the city, the Fatty Roll (do not be deterred by the name) with toro, cilantro, scallions, tempura crunch, avocado, and spicy mayo. Rise also has an amazing rotating, seasonal special maki list that incorporates exotic ingredients like garlic sauce, peaches, mangos and strawberries, as well as rolls served warm.
Rise also provides speedy delivery and carry-out too. But, if you don’t mind waiting… guess I’ll see you in line.
