Rick Bayless Gives You Free Food (and a Ride Home)

The Ketel One Canteen

by Stephanie Miller – January 1, 2010

Got your attention, didn’t I?

Rick Bayless might not be the one driving you home after a late night bar crawl on Rush (leave that to a fleet of cars), but Ketel One Vodka and Bayless do want to make sure that you arrive home safely and your late-night food cravings are satisfied.

The vodka brand and the beloved Chicago chef are teaming up to bring Chicagoans the Ketel One Canteen – a late-night food cart that will offer a complimentary menu by Rick Bayless, bottled water and free rides home.

Tonight and tomorrow night (Dec. 11 and 12), the Canteen will be in Mariano Park (Bellevue and Rush) from midnight to 2 am. The truck debuted in New York and will travel to Los Angeles, where Michael Psilakis (Chef/Restaurateur behind the Greek mainstay Anthos in NYC) and Ilan Hall (winner of Top Chef Season Two) created the respective menus. The NYC menu included lamb burgers, char-grilled chicken shish kebab pitas and a caponata and couscous wrap for the health freaks.

So what can a Cheeky girl expect to nosh on late night?

  • Black Bean and Caramelized Onion and Beef Tortas
  • Black Bean and Chorizo Tortas
  • Roasted Poblano Potato Tacos
  • Pork Tinga Tacos

It may be some of the tastiest cuisine to hit the scene. I’ll opt for a gourmet shredded pulled pork taco any day.

But don’t get too excited. Bayless won’t be in the Canteen kitchen. The recipes were derived from his cookbook and he served as inspiration for the menu.
