Pretty Good Dance Moves

by Neph Basedow – November 13, 2008

What do you get when you mix one part electronica, one part pop and one part indie rock? You get Chicago’s newest electro-pop trio, Pretty Good Dance Moves. The group’s self-released extended play (EP), PGDM was released to praiseworthy reviews earlier this year, thanks in part to its curious inclusion of such instruments as the vibraphone, violin, xylophone and piano – all matched to the backbeat of a drum machine.

The majority of songs feature enchanting guy/gal vocal exchanges between singers Jimmy Gianopolis and Genevieve Schatz (of Company of Thieves fame). Genevieve’s soulful, Bjork-like harmonies add a mystical element to the group’s otherwise electronic sound. Synth-master, Aaron Allietta, creates intricate loops, helping form the group’s electro-pop sound – evocative of early Postal Service, but with a style all their own.

Pretty Good Dance Moves couldn’t have chosen a more perfect name for their group. Their EP is the ideal soundtrack to accompany an evening of dancing the night away – whether in a club or your own bedroom, these beats will undoubtedly get you moving. Tracks like “Demons Dancing” and “PGDM” are quintessential electronica songs that command, not only your attention, but your dance moves too.
