Scene and Be Seen

Get you Cheeky Card! One of my closest friends lives in New York and consistently makes sure I understand that Chicago is NOT, under any circumstances, a place where fashion is incubated. I consistently disagree, and the recent expansion of Chicago’s Barneys store was my first phone call to support my argument. Now, I have yet another source for disagreement with the opening of Piazza Sempione on Oak Street. In fact, the Italian brand only has three stores in the states and it chose Chicago as its third location. And aren’t we glad. The store is a wonder in itself – from the all-glass façade – perfect for peaking inside – to the warm and inviting colors of white and gray that wash the inside. The entrance is unique with its see-through metal screen resembling chain mail. And inside, the design is a part of everything, from the walls which have been covered in a textured wallpaper that resembles the pattern of an antique rug, to the blond oak floor that has been sanded and smoked for a vintage effect, to the cement columns that line the interior. The furniture is covered in brushed silver leather and trimmed in Piazza Sempione’s signature blue. Pale grey velvet curtains and white porcelain chandeliers add softness and glamour.
And that gives a little glimpse into the real reason that you are there; the clothes. This season’s collection is nothing short of show-stopping, with pieces meant to move seamlessly from day to night, from casual to formal, and to showcase proportions which the company defines by layering pieces. Printed silk dresses and pleated skirts using luxe fabrics like silk and brocade are just a few key items you might be coveting when you step inside. Each piece is made right in Italy after a team of design experts specially choose the perfect fabric. Then they make sure everything – from the cut and fit to the fabric – is done perfectly before it’s shipped to the states.
And to think, all this Italian luxury right at our fingertips… how could we possibly resist. Take that, my New York friend.
