Hat Hair Be Gone

Keep Your Mane Winter Free

by Kim Peiffer – January 5, 2010

Battle the bitter cold and negative temperatures? We think not. Fight the cold in style with a super warm hat, but don’t pay the price of ending up with hat hair. Take these cues to avoid the dreaded mop head for good, without freezing your noggin off.

Fight Static: Putting a hat on your head before heading outside often means a surge of static energy when you finally take it off. Our secret? Fight static cling with a dryer sheet. Yep, that’s right – a dryer sheet. Take one from the box and rub it over your head to cure static – we swear, it works like magic!

Use the right shampoo: It’s cold outside, so guess what? It’s also dry as dry can be. Moisturize the heck out of your hair this time of year, which will help it retain its shape when you head outside – hat or no hat. Also, try using a deep conditioner more often this time of year – it’ll make a huge difference, no matter what kind you use.

Hairspray is your friend: Carry a mini bottle with you and (lightly) mist it on after you take your hat off, then brush through. The hairspray/brushing combo should help release some of the dents made by hair – just don’t over-apply the spray or you’ll end up with a sticky mess.

When possible, run a dryer through it: One of the best and most efficient ways to remove dents is to run a blowdryer through it after you take your hat off. If you are coming back home and are able to do so, just run a brush and dryer on it for a minute and the kinks should be less kinky in no time! And if you have major kinks, run a straightener through on low heat. It’ll add shine and soften those lines.

Now ladies, get out there – hat and all – and show off your snow bunny side. Furry boots; parkas; soft, cute gloves; and hats! Yes, we hate the cold, but we might as well look cute when we’re fighting our way through winter!
