As summer fades, it’s all about what’s next for fall. Naturally this applies to wardrobe, makeup and shoes, but recent runway trends remind us that even hair can be in and out of style.
David Barnett, Creative Director of The Salon at Ulta, shares his two cents on haute hair for fall. For starters, he says color is going more natural. “For fall looks we’ve really been seeing a lot of natural color tones, getting away from anything that’s too heavily highlighted, anything that’s too far away from natural color,” he says. “It’s all about getting the hair back to this kind of natural enhanced look.”
And that applies to cuts as well – nothing too drastic. “I think because of the economy we’re seeing people get haircuts a lot less often, so we are seeing some very structured shapes with a very strong line,” he says. “This type of hair can grow out and reinvent itself as it grows out, and you end up with a really whispy shape that you don’t have to cut every five weeks. These new haircuts are built to last 8-10 weeks instead.”
But instead of running to the salon for the latest “Rachel,” trends in hair are now more about you. “Hair is all about individuality now, it’s not about a set shape anymore,” Barnett says. “ It used to be back in the 60’s and 70’s it had to be a certain look, but it’s not like that anymore: it’s about everyone being an individual and what suits the individual best. If bangs work, go for them, if they don’t work for you, stay far away!”
One star that has her best coif forward is Katie Holmes. “Katie’s hair is very on-trend at the moment,” Barnett said. “She’s got that very structured shape and a shorter look that has been very popular recently.”
And before you commit to a fall look, you might want to start from scratch with a little end-of-summer rehab. After abusing hair all summer with swimming pools, chlorine and sun damage, strands can appear fried and lacking luster. Barnett recommends coming in to Ulta for the popular Davines Detoxifying treatment, which removes build up from chlorine or harmful minerals from the pool or UV rays and replaces lost essential oils and moisture in the hair. Couple that with a clear gloss application for maximum shine, and you’ll be one shiny, happy person.
