Cheeky Mama Ellee Pai Hong

She's a Journalist, a City Dweller and a Mom

by Sara R. Fisher And Caitlin Murray Giles – June 22, 2011

As a regular feature on our Cheeky Mamas column, we are going to get to know some of the Cheekiest moms around town. Up first? Ellee Pai Hong.

Ellee is every Cheeky Mama’s role model. She’s figured out how to balance motherhood, career and her marriage all with a sweet smile. Ellee is currently the host of Comcast Newsmakers and is formerly a news anchor on NBC 5 where she worked from 2003-2009.

Ellee is not only a mover and a shaker in the news world, but is also smart as a whip. As a child she moved to the United States from Korea and has a Bachelor’s Degree from Ewha Women’s University in Seoul and a Master’s Degree from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. A total underachiever, yeah right!

As if this wasn’t all Cheeky enough, Ellee is an Emmy nominee and has also been featured in several publications including Chicago Parent and Wind. A dedicated member of the Chicago community, Ellee serves as a board member for the Chicago Children’s Choir and an honorary board member for HANUL Family Alliance. Ellee is a city mama – she lives in Chicago with her husband John and their two children, Avonlea and Anden.

Cheeky Mama Caitlin: What are some of your favorite spots around town for family outings?
Ellee Pai Hong:
We have such great parks in the city, my kids love them. Some of my new favorites are Skinner Park and also the one on Adams and Peoria.

Cheeky Mama Caitlin: What is your favorite local date night destination?
Sushi Wabi. They have the best lemon drop martinis in the city and the yummiest micro green roll (made without rice so no carbs!).

Cheeky Mama Caitlin: How’d you decide between raising kids in the city versus the ‘burbs?
The city has so much to offer. I wanted my children to take advantage of the culture, museums and, most importantly, the diversity.

Cheeky Mama Caitlin: What do you love most about raising your family in Chicago?
I love the fact that the Shedd, the Chicago Children’s Museum, Adler Planetarium and all the other great museums in the city are in my “backyard.”

Cheeky Mama Caitlin: What is your least favorite part about raising your family in Chicago?
Paying for parking!

Cheeky Mama Caitlin: Do you have any tips of managing work/life balance for all of the busy Chicago moms out there?
EPH: I’d love some tips, too! Life is all about balance, isn’t it? Sounds so simple but is so difficult to do!  I guess my advice and what I try to do is to be fully present in the time I do have with my family….and not let my “to do” list get in the way.

Cheeky Mama Caitlin: What do you do to recharge and take a moment just for you?
EPH: I try to do 30 minutes of quiet time a day. Not always possible but I read a few Bible verses, pray and really try and keep an open mind and heart to what God has in store for me.

Cheeky Mama Caitlin: What is the Cheekiest thing you’ve done today?
Asked my five-year-old to let mommy have a turn at Dance Central on Kinect. Danced to Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” and scored over 370,000. Still got my moves!
