I like stories that unspool slowly, where we get to know the characters intimately through a series of events, and so I’ve never been a big fan of short story collections. But a collection of short stories about Chicago? It had me at ‘Hello.’ Mike Walker’s Chicago Shorts is a series of anecdotes about the author’s experiences of growing up in the Chicago suburbs—a teeny town called Dolton—in the 1960s and 70s.
