Learn to Move Those Two Left Feet

Lisa CurlockWho wouldn’t like to have a dancer’s body… and the mad dance skills that go with it? Chicago dance expert Lisa Scurlock tells us all about her life as a dancer and how we can get our own groove on!

Dancing since she was just three-years-old, Lisa is now a multi-talented professional dancer who’s trained in ballet, jazz, modern/contemporary, hip-hop and tap! “Dance is therapeutic, artistic, beneficial exercise and fun. Dance is my release and how I express myself,” she says. Lisa danced professionally here in Chicago with Inaside Chicago Dance for five years. She also danced on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in 2007 and has performed at the Auditorium Theatre and the Chicago Theatre. “The joy of performing dance on stage is priceless. I still get nerves and butterflies before a show and that is part of the joy,” she tells us.

Now Lisa is sharing her love for dance with others by teaching dance to kids and adults. “Ever since I was young I was asked to assist the teacher to sub dance classes and eventually teach classes of my own. Dance has always come natural to me and I love being able to share my knowledge with others.” Lisa teaches creative movement, hip-hop and ballet to kids and teens, and jazz, hip-hop, cardio dance, Zumba and yoga to adults. The excitement she brings to her classes helps inspire students to reach new limits physically. “I think I bring joy to people’s days and I love inspiring others to stay fit and be healthy.”

Adding dance into your regular fitness routine also requires a bit of balance. In order to keep her body in Cheeky shape, Lisa combines her own dance practice with running or the elliptical trainer, core work, upper body strengthening and yoga. After she attended Wanderlust, a nation-wide yoga festival led by some of the nation’s top yoga instructors, she made it her goal to become a certified yoga instructor. Since adding yoga to her week, her strength and flexibility have significantly improved which has also helped her dance practice. “My mind, body and soul have been enriched due to yoga and shines through my dancing,” she says.

If you’re thinking about adding a little dance to your regular workout routine, Lisa wants you to know that “Everyone has the ability to dance.” Two left feet or not, get out there and take a dance class with Lisa!
