Why Vacation When You Could Staycation?

The Perfect Weekend Getaway in Your Own Backyard

by Danielle Nash – August 15, 2013

In my own humble opinion, Chicago is hands down the greatest city in the world. Seriously. As a kid I would beg my parents to fly me from New York to the Windy City so I could spend the weekend with my cousins and get even 48-hours’ worth of the magic that is Chicago, Illinois. Maybe not everyone has the heightened sense of romanticism about the city that I do, but no one can argue with the fact that there are pretty amazing things to do here. If you’re bumming hard that you didn’t make it cross-country or overseas this summer, read on for a fab staycation weekend to round out your summer ’13!

FRIDAY

Oak Street BeachTake the day off and head to Oak Street Beach for a sun- and sand-filled day of perfection. Lay out with a good book or some trashy mags and take in one of the best views of the city. Or throw together an impromptu pickup volleyball game if you’re feeling restless! Make sure to hit up Oak Street Beach Food + Drink for snacks and a fruity drink when you get hungry. Who says you can’t at least pretend you’re on an island getaway? Once you’ve caught enough rays, freshen up for a night out on the town! Start your night off right with dinner and drinks from the sharing menu at Mercadito. Once you’ve enjoyed a delicious Mexican feast, make your way over to The Underground to drink and dance the night away!

SATURDAY

Big StarAfter all that drinking and dancing, you’re going to need a morning pick me up. After sleeping in a bit (you are on vacation after all!) go sweat it out with a late morning Corepower Yoga class at the Bucktown studio. The noon heated power yoga session will leave you feeling refreshed, relaxed and ready to eat again! Continue the tropical vacay vibe with some tacos and margs on the outdoor patio at Big Star before heading out for an afternoon of Bucktown boutique hopping. Since you passed on the expensive plane tickets, feel free to splurge on a few new items, guilt-free! I recommend hitting up von Z, City Soles, Edith Hart and Vive La Femme for some fabulous picks and a discount with your Cheeky Card!

After you’ve shopped till ya dropped, head over to West Loop favorite Girl & the Goat for a truly spectacular dining experience – you must save room for dessert. Be sure to score a reservation in advance as this phenomenal hotspot will no doubt be packed on a weekend evening. End your night over by the water with a fireworks show outside of Navy Pier starting at 10:15pm every Saturday this summer. Enjoying the fireworks over Lake Michigan with a superb view of the Chicago skyline, you’ll swear you’re never leaving the city again.

For your last day of staycation, make your way to HUB51 for a decadent brunch. Start with a bloody or make-your-own mimosa and move on to any of the breakfast or lunch options offered on the brunch menu. I promise they’re all fantastic. Walk off brunch with a stroll over to the Art Institute. Throw a little culture into your weekend of fun with the nationally acclaimed “Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity” exhibit, in Chicago through September as the last stop on its world tour. By the time you’ve gone through the exhibit and paid a quick visit to your other Art Institute faves, it will be time to head home. Vacation’s over… until next weekend!
