Chicago chefs are chipping in once again to support the heinous oil spill in the Gulf. On Sunday, July 25th, Chicago chefs, restaurants, brewers, wineries and distilleries will come together to benefit one of two Gulf Coast charitable funds: The Greater New Orleans Foundation’s Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund (which benefits people affected by the spill) or Thibodaux, Louisiana’s The Barataria-Terrbonne Estuary Foundation (which supports wildlife polluted by the spill). Your donation of (at least) $50 can be attributed to either fund and serves as registration for the event. Because the brains behind the event are super shrewd and uber charitable, donations will be made via razoo.com, eliminating any fees that would have to come out of the charitable proceeds. This event will feature chefs and restaurants consistent with some of the other, better-known, summertime culinary soirees such as Purple Pig, NAHA, Perennial, Big Jones, Sepia, Prairie Fire, Prairie Grass Café, the Bristol, Hot Chocolate, Kith and Kin, Big Jones and Mana Food Bar will be cookin’ up a storm.
Carrie Nahabedian, James Beard Award-winning chef of NAHA, jumped on board right away because ‘This is not just a Gulf of Mexico tragedy; this is a national tragedy and Americans across the country are being affected. This benefit is just one small way of standing up here in Chicago to help out our friends in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast…. I’m going to cook something reflective of our Great Lakes to pay homage to the Gulf of Mexico. Probably a whitefish from Purdy Farms from the U.S./Canadian border with wheatberries, summer squash and roasted corn if it’s available. Basically a southern succotash with a northern whitefish.’
Additionally, North Shore Distillery, Rare Tea Cellars and Death’s Door Spirits will be mixing up the libations. Few details are known just yet, but expect more big names to jump on board in the next couple of days. In the meantime, write this down: July 25th, 5 pm-7 pm at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Lincoln Park.
