Shaun Rajah, Special Events Manager at The Drake Hotel, has launched a new monthly occasion called Catwalk and Cocktails in the Palm Court. This evening affair features local designers showcasing their collection while guests mingle and network. A runway is resurrected in the historical Palm Court (dignitaries like the late Diana, Princess of Wales, and Hilary Clinton have famously enjoyed tea there) as Chicago-based clothing designers including Quinton D’Alexander and Bryan K. Osborn show off their looks for the fall and winter.
Rajah explains that he came up with the concept for Catwalk and Cocktails because, “the Palm Court room is so elegant I knew that people would come and local designers could use the exposure.” The Palm Court is designed around a gorgeous limestone fountain, making a beautiful back drop for a night of fashion. On the selected date each month, the pre-show festivities take place from 5-6:30 pm. There are live performances and a DJ spinning tunes. Guests mingle and enjoy appetizers and spirits from the cash bar until the runway show kicks off promptly at 6:30 pm.
The teaming of fashion and the Palm Court doesn’t stop at Catwalk and Cocktails. Other fashion-themed events slated for the next couple of months include the Chicago Fashion Foundation’s Annual Cocktail Reception on September 16, a launch party for Chicago-based jewelry store 3 Hearts Boutique on September 23 from 7:30-10:30 pm and blogger/former Playboy model Candace Jordan’s (Candid Candace) “50 and Beautiful” charity event, including a runway show starring models ages 50 and older. Also, in October the Palm Court is hosting a Halloween dance party featuring the swing band Fat Cats.
