I’m not even going to attempt to pretend that I haven’t given in to The Bachelorette addiction. The show is the only thing that makes my Mondays tolerable.
But the show is ridiculous, in theory. One girl is put in a situation with a few dozen, unrealistically attractive men and expected to find her husband after only a few weeks of courtship. She takes them on ridiculous dates to exotic locations, when in reality a first or second or even a third date is usually spent at a restaurant or movie theatre. That’s the thing – there is nothing realistic about the show. But that doesn’t make it any less entertaining.
Ali Fedotowsky, a cast-off from last year’s The Bachelor, is the new Bachelorette this season. She brings an amazing sense of honesty and feistiness to the show, and after being thrown into an ocean of men in the first episode, she has narrowed her candidates down to just two suitors, and not necessarily by choice.
Frank. Wow. How could you?! After this week’s episode, those who never believed anything about the drama-filled show probably came a bit closer to being convinced. Leaving because you’re in love with your ex? That’s a new low. An even bigger low? Saying you’re in love with your ex… and Ali. But even after he was such a jerk, you couldn’t help but feel sorry for the poor guy as he sobbed his way off of the Tahitian beach. It was like the anti-Tahiti scene.
But, in true show business fashion – because let’s not forget that this is television – the show must go on. There are two amazing guys left. They’re just not Ali’s obvious choice, Frank.
Every season there is the nauseatingly attractive romantic, and this season, that man is Roberto, the former baseball player from Florida. Any woman who says she wouldn’t want to be taken dancing in the streets of southern Spain is just lying. I found myself oddly jealous of a television show during this scene between Ali and Roberto. Could he win? Absolutely. Is there more to him than just his deep brown eyes? To be determined.
Finally there’s Chris. He’s the down-to-earth, family-loving sweetheart who melts hearts whenever he talks about his special relationship with his late mother. He’s the most likeable who had a slow start, but he’s definitely the one that seems to have the right personality. And the right, dimply smile. Did I give away my favorite?
There’s something about watching beautiful people doing beautiful things in beautiful places that reels you in every week. Will I ever get to go frolicking on a glacier in Iceland, and then whisked away in a helicopter? Maybe. Most likely not. But watching Ali and her men experience this on television makes that dream seem a little more realistic.
You can call it trashy, you can call it unrealistic, but whatever you call it, you can’t call it unentertaining. The Bachelorette is almost at its close, and Ali will choose her final man. After six seasons, the show that everyone loves to hate is sure to surprise everyone once again.
The show airs on Monday nights at 7 pm on ABC.
