Golden Globes Fashion: Hits or Misses?

Who Was Red Carpet Royalty and Who Wasn't Even Nominated

by Katelyn Finn – January 18, 2012

Awards Season is in full swing, and to me that means one thing: dresses-a-plenty! As Sunday evening’s red carpet proved, the Golden Globes allow for a less formal environment. Starlets were able to indulge in more playful fashion choices, and even for some, unconventional ones. Trends of the night were as follows: muted color palettes (think Champagne, pale pink, nude), Grecian silhouettes (see Emma Stone and Mila Kunis), mermaid skirts (Sofia Vergara and Reese nailed it), and jeweled headbands (a la Michelle Williams and Charlize Theron) – all truly gorgeous touches for an event such as the Globes. Although there were many a beautiful ensemble, I wanted to share my top ten looks. Feast your eyes on my drop dead favorites of the magical affair.

Although the rest of the selection is not organized in order from best to worst, I will start with my number one, numero uno, of the night. Claire Danes’ J. Mendel black and white stunner absolutely stole my sartorial heart. If the embellished shoulders and jeweled belt at a cinched waist wasn’t enough, Ms. Danes turned around to bare a sexy open back with a gorgeous beaded frame. To put it simply, she killed it.

Adorable, talented, fashionably inclined and she made out with Ryan Gosling? If I didn’t love her, I would totally hate her. Emma Stone, per usual, looked absolutely incredible. In a maroon and raspberry coupling, the custom made Lanvin gown won Emma Stone my vote. (Notable mention: true or false that jeweled eagle broach on her belt is over the top? Obviously a hypothetical…)

Charlize Theron is a woman who could wear a burlap sap and look amazing, but she managed to outdo even herself in this little number. The Dior Couture confection in pale pink had a thigh high slit that gave the look a bit of sex appeal – but truth be told – with the addition of her sparkling headband, Miss Theron had a look that was purely ethereal.

Angelina Jolie quite stepped out of her style comfort zone with this Atelier Versace gown. Wearing candlelight white satin with a red envelope fold at the neckline, Angelina looked like the epitome of glamour.  Impressed with her unexpected choice, this dress is the talk of Tinseltown.

The brilliant star of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo stayed true to her fashion roots and displayed her signature color. Rooney Mara wowed in a raven black Nina Ricci silk faille dress with core cut-outs. I’m not sure if it was her simply gorgeous face or the fabulous dress, but she looked perfect.

The Glee star known for her red carpet posing perfection as well as her increasingly popular fashion choices, did not disappoint at the Globes this year. In a Marchesa antique embroidered illusion dress, Lea Michele looked simply fantastic. The unusual metallic color caught my attention and made it a staple on my top ten.

Reese Witherspoon’s Zac Posen taffeta bustier dress showcased her va-va-voom bod. Hitting in all the right places, the simplicity of the dress paired with the ladylike sweetheart neckline put this strawberry-hued number on my list.

Jessica Biel’s nude lace dress had an incredibly romantic feel to it… dare I say, almost bridal? (Perhaps with her pending nuptials to JT in the air, she is hearing wedding bells, even on the red carpet). That aside, she looked completely beautiful in this Elie Saab gown.

Natalie Portman channeled Marilyn Monroe a la Gentleman Prefer Blondes in this Lanvin dress. Hot pink with a touch of scarlet at the top of the bustier – almost in color blocking form – this dress was to-die-for.

Nicole Richie – the fashion darling that she is – always seems to be a show stopper. Her metallic Julien Macdonald gown was absolutely ideal for the red carpet. The subtle geometric detailing took this dress from pretty to fashion forward.
